Our journey began with Maria Short's passion for baking. At a young age, Maria was enchanted by the wonderful world of pastries, leading her to prestigious culinary institutions. Armed with knowledge from Baltimore International Culinary College and an honorable graduation from L’Academie de Cuisine’s Pastry Arts program, Maria gained expertise working across diverse culinary environments. From patisseries to restaurants and even imparting knowledge to Merchant Marines, her dedication to the craft has always been unwavering.

It was during one of her teaching sessions that Maria crossed paths with Dien, a Merchant Marine with Hawaiian roots and a heart full of wanderlust. Dien's voyages spanned continents, but for him, Hawaii remained an unmatched paradise. It’s this love for Hawaii and Maria’s passion for baking that merged into the inception of Short N Sweet Bakery & Cafe. We first planted our feet in Hawi in 2004, but as our offerings grew, so did our need for space. By 2010, we relocated to a spacious establishment in Hilo, introducing an expanded menu with artisan breads, croissants, and bagels. We also took pride in hosting unique events like wine gatherings and serene afternoon teas.

Our commitment has always been to offer the best to Hilo’s residents and its visitors. Every day, as the sun rises, we are reminded of the paradise we live in and the joy we find in baking for our community.
